Lowball bids, prices that change as soon as your belongings are packed onto the moving truck, shady (or non-existent) contracts and holding your goods hostage – moving can be fraught with scams and risks. How can you avoid moving scams and be sure your moving company is reputable?
- Get a cost estimate based on weight, not on cubic feet. A weight-based estimate is accurate and indisputable when it comes time to pay for your move.
- Get an in-person estimate. Website and phone estimates are blind guesses and are red flags. Never trust a company that refuses to put their estimate in writing.
- Check the company’s credentials. Do they have a physical address? Are they licensed, bonded and insured? Are they in good standing with the Better Business Bureau? If there’s little or no record of the company, you’re taking a big risk.
- When your moving van pulls up, is it branded and are the crews uniformed? If the truck is generic and the movers unattached to a particular company, you may never see your things again.
- Never pay in cash. If a company demands a large amount of cash, you’re probably looking at a scan.
